BMW R100RS gearbox workout
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.5 лет назад
Riding along one of my favorite roads, the Omeo Highway. I have a full touring load on board, heading to the Blue Duck Inn. There are not many sections of straight road for 100 k's. A few unwitting sports bikes find themselves in the lair of the RS.
BMW R100 RS track day session 2
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.5 лет назад
Floggin' the old RS around a 1 mile track. Slower first lap to wake the tyres up. I nearly ran out of track at 15 or so minutes, thought I'd take the big sweeper further out and see what happened. I went further out, Lol! Pilot Activs front and rear 4/00-18 and 3.25-19

Basically stock '81 RS with Pilot Activs front and rear, 4/00 and 3.25 First day on a track, plagued by false neutrals at the end of the straight all day. I'll have to sort that out. This was session 3, still playing with 2nd or 3rd on a couple of corners. Track is one mile/1.6 km long, 300 metre straight. It's a training track not a race track, according to an official. I reckon it's a racetra...
New Staintunes on my R100 RS

Recently fitted staintunes sound real good. Need to make another left hand bracket to lift the left muffler higher. It looks worse than it is ;-)

Time to drag it out and wash last ride's bugs off. Not a bad idle on a cold engine. Still playing with the engine breather to assess excess oil flow to carbs.

First up, the audio is outa wack with the vid. Time for another bloody gopro. This road runs from Jindabyne to Buchan. I'm heading to the Cold Flame rally 2017, at Pinch River I don't think anything beats this bike for versatility.

Maravillosa
They sound great. Great note from mine above the originals that rusted internally.
Awesome bike and videos. Finally got myself one. Question, I see you previously had a large fog lamp attached to the crash bars and transitioned to these. Any reason for the switch and how were you able to get these attached? Looks great. Id love to do something similar
Thanks! For 20 years I used to have 2 x 100 watt halogen 6" lights, both spread beam, not pencil beam. They were very good. One eventually fell off because the steel bracket that I welded to the crash bar broke, so I though time to change and try the led for smaller size. The led lights are Montster M55, not sure if they're still available. I didn't use the 100 watt halogens continuously for frequent night riding, they just came in handy for those infrequent times riding at night. So no problems with a flat battery. There are good led and not so good. For urban/touring I'd go good led driving lights, and led headlight. No real problem for stock charging system. For rural living or extended remote touring, I'd go back to another pair of 6" halogen and maybe a 450 watt alternator upgrade. Depends how many miles you'll do at night and if driving lights will be on most of the time. Check out ADV rider forum if you haven't already. Best names in airhead know how. ADVrider forums> old's cool> airheads.
@@jeffr100rs appreciate it! Looking forward to seeing more videos
@@jeffr100rs forgot to ask, was the lower fairing altered to get these on? You don't see these often on the RS
@@alis9406 The lights are very close to the fairing, mounted on modified crash bars. Just the top horizontal section with a plate welded for the light mount. I wore the crash bars out so it seemed a good idea.
There have been a few times I've raced guys on the street informally on my RS and it scared the heck out of me. Probably for the best. I did have enough sense to make sure the streets were completely clear & dry though, but the bike wallowed and shook quite a bit even though ridden smoothly. I confess I'd be afraid to ride it on the coarse. Unless it was limited to bikes under 90cc.
It doesn't take much to upset the handling on these RS. Could be frame or fork damage from previous owners, or a number of other things. When all is in order, high and low speed stability are there. They shine at riding hard at low speed like in the tight mountains, where the playing field with sports bikes is much more even!
@@jeffr100rs It's the frame flex inherent in these bikes when pressed hard.
@@20111111jorg High speed uneven surface on big curves isn't the most stable of places to be on my RS because of 'everything flex', heavily loaded for touring in a straight line and nice sweepers at higher speed is planted. Lower speed high effort in the twisties is planted too. This video is on a perfectly smooth surface, any frame flex was not an issue.
Love watching you give the old girl the pride she deserves, she has that Tiger snarl going on. Well done sir!
Brand new set of Staintune mufflers, trying them out. ;-) 85 laps that day, put my panniers back on and rode home. The whole package is excellent, on or off road.
@@jeffr100rs So they making them again ?I bought a set back in 86 I think they were at Mittagong from memory. I heard he sold the business and they discontinued the Old airhead exhausts
@@robwhite461 It's an old enough vid for Adrian from the original Staintune to have made the pipes. Custom 40mm ducati internal baffle. I think there's some talk of airhead mufflers from the new staintune owners.
The R S 100 S never has been a Racing Bike.it was built for Cryising I have made 296.000 miles on my Model 1977 with no Problems what so Ever
It was racing bike that day, sort of like a tight mountain road without hills or trees. The mountains are much tighter and better for hunting tho.
Ohhh , it's a hard Job with a original BMW R 100 👍🏁! The tires, transmision ....... Thanks for that
I remember being given a riding lesson by a bloke on a GL1500 Goldwing while I was on my 1989 ZX10. That taught me a whole lot. Years later when on my H-D Superglide I gave the same lesson to a dude on a CBR600R. 😁😂😁 It's not always the horse, sometimes it's the jockey.
Fair play!
This is great! Always love seeing the old airheads getting to stretch their legs a bit!
Nice riding I bet Your Pilot Actives were looking worst for wear after a day there ? :)
All in a day's work for those tyres, which Michellin no longer make.... They were the go to for many airhead riders. On the day of this vid the rear was new and the front had 8 k kilometres. The front tyre didn't give a hint of trouble.
Turn off the heated grips and ditch the panniers and top box.
I didn't have the grips on but someone else mention taking the panniers and top box off. Worth a try.
He's in the power band for sure
ΥΟU COULD GO FASTER WITH ONE GEAR UP !!!!!
Significant handling reduction with lower revs I've found. 2nd gear high rpm good handling and good power and engine braking, 3rd gear poor handling compared, no power, no engine braking. A bit taller 2nd gear and shorter 3rd would be good, but for just that track.
@@jeffr100rs WITH RPM NEAR THE RED LIMIT -- MAKES THE ENGINE MASTER OF THE HANDLING AND BOTHERS YOU TO HAVE A SMOOTH EXIT OF THE CORNERS WITH ENOUGH POWER TO ACCELERATE !!!!!
@@mitsospouliezos6289 I did 85 laps that day and found out early what was quickest, best gear and what handled best. That's the main thing. And as a stock road bike with pilot activ tyres on it the bike was mostly at its limit, and mostly as quick as the others through the corners which is always fun. Higher rpm in 2nd on tight corners is where handling and control is for my RS. The same corners in 3rd is way down the ladder in all regards. I'm lucky if there's 70hp to play with, lol.
Great ride👍
Great bike, relaxing footage. How I wish I could ride over there.
Thanks, It's a lot of fun throwing all that weight around on tight mountain roads. I'm fortunate to be able to ride roads with little traffic. I've got a lot of other youtube vids riding the RS.
Had an 82 RS now still have an 88 RS that I will probably never let go of. You can tour at 100mph all day, not something you can do on many other bikes 40 years old. It may not excel on the race track, but there is much more to motorcycling than that. I take mine out once in a while as a break from my more modern bikes, and it's still a lot of fun.
This RS has been my only bike for 28 years. I think it excelled at this little practice track with no really long straights, almost as tight as my favorite mountain roads where it really excels. Full on dirt road adventures most always with a ton of camping gear are part of it's ability. Nothing new takes my fancy as being better all round than the RS. And I can fix it. About 2015, I was able to use very good oe painted parts as well as many other very good s/hand parts, which wiped 20 years of my patina off the bike. Now it's slowly heading back into patina.
@@jeffr100rs Nice. Mine got a complete new suit of paint about the same time. Now I can just see a few chips here and there, usually by the front grill.
I can practically feel the valve covers scraping !
I pretty much ruined both covers that day. They're now turned upside down, only 50% worn, lol.
Nice, would've liked to see more of the filtering set up though.
Some aspects of the filtration changed since making this video, I should make a new vid. My water is constantly top quality, year after year.
i'd say holmes knows how to ride his beemer pretty well!thanks for posting a "riders" video instead of a walk around or a start up etc. i love the way my old girl(74 r90s) can get down the road when i'm feeling it. cheers!
Thanks Robert, there are several other RS videos on my channel. I also have some RS video on 'jeff81rs' youtube channel. They're fun to ride hard, eh!
After 11 years, how is the natural pool? Is it still as clean? How is the maintenance? What are the pros and cons compared to the chlorinated swimming pool?
The pool is about 16 years old now. It is a very consistent environment and the water is always excellent. I vacuum as required to clear string algae. String algae produces very clear water. Conventional chlorine pools and natural pools are so far apart, there is almost nothing to compare. If an inquiry says they are looking at both options, I always advise to go with the conventional type. Special living pools need special owners, basically.
May I ask if natural pool with fish such a koi will make the pool smell ?
That depends on the amount of koi to the amount of water. I had a 2kg koi in this pool for 15 years, no smelly water. But, I have a lot of water in this pool so the ratio is very good. I rarely fed the koi.
The only machine that made me feel good in motorways (even raining). The best fairing ever.
Nice riding on one of the greatest BMW's ever made.
Thanks Lex, basically my only bike for the last 28 years. I knew I was onto something back then.
I can`t hear the real engine sound. My 81`sounds better!Or did you hide the microphone in your pocket?
Great ride ! thanks for sharing
Hi mate, what year is your bike please...?
The RS was born in September ‘81. I manage to get two years of life out of it every year. Cost me a few bob doing it tho.
@@jeffr100rs I'm looking at purchasing a 1983 BMWr100rs...Oz NSW here.
Ian Yensch I’m in Albury. A hugely capable bike, on and off road, in my experience. I’ve had mine about 28 years and no other bike appeals to me from that experience. I thinks it’s one of the best all purpose bikes ever built.
@@jeffr100rs Tumbarumba boy here mate...now up North near Byron.. Would love to chew your ear off about potential purchase...how do I get in touch with you...?
Ian Yensch perhaps message me, Jeff Knox on face book and I’ll give you my mobile number.
But not gonna lie the plant deco in the background are A+ class👍
The water is A class as well. This pool is a natural water regeneration plant. It tastes much better than most peoples home water supply. Unless they like the taste of chlorine. My pool doesn’t have lots of people swimming in it, and has 20+metres visibility which is more clear than most domestic water supplies.
@@jeffr100rs Wait so how do I make my swimming pool's water clear?🤔 The swimming pool in my house (not personally owned btw) starts to turn green after 2-3 days of no chlorine treatment.
Ikan Masin Gaming My biological pool is purposely built to function without any chemicals whatsoever. 100% unsanitised. It is nothing like a conventional chlorinated pool. You need to take a water sample to a pool shop for analysis and add the required chemicals to make it function properly.
@@jeffr100rs unsanitized?
Ikan Masin Gaming 100% living water. Not biologically dead (sanitised)
Why would you drink that? Clean you mean no chlorine & chemicals hell yeah that's dirty.
Where did you get these from? I have an R100RT (single sided). Are yours 45mm?
Staintune, Australia. Maybe no longer in business? 38mm headers, 44mm Ducati internals as opposed to standard sport pipe's 40mm. These are a copy of what Mr. Staintune Himself, Adam, built for his '81 RS
@@jeffr100rs, hmmm. I have a 1991 R100RT, and it uses 45mm slip on mufflers. I also had assumed that "Staintune" was a made up brand name as in STAy IN TUNE.
@@mrnickbig1 It is/was the brand name. High quality kit. I don't know if they made mufflers for mono models. Staintune made headers and mufflers for many other motorcycle brands too.
@@jeffr100rs, I can not find any place that sells new Staintune exhausts for BMWs.
@@mrnickbig1 staintune.com.au/ If you're not in Australia it might be difficult. If Staintune are closing down it will be even more difficult. Email them via the website link above and see what they can do for you.
Love that you're still taking the bike to track days. I'm working on a '78 R80/7 on my channel and if I still have it in the spring will probably take it to the Utah Motorsports Campus outside of Salt Lake City. I've had my K1600GT there, and it ROCKS. Having something with a third of the power and half the weight would be soooo much fun! Check out our channel for all kinds of silliness...
Recently bought a 1990 model. I also own a Tuono. Both are brilliant to ride. Sure the Beemer is down on bhp but on twisty A roads this will keep up with quite a lot if bikes out there. Interestingly I get a lot of positive comments on the bike when parked up. I'm the wrong side of 50 and grew up with sports bikes however the market has evolved - everyone I know who had a Blade, Gixer etc now has a GS, multistrada etc. I just wanted a quirky classic and couldn't be happier!
Good stuff. On the right tight mountain road, the sports bikes can get in the way. Of course it's not hard to get past a lot of riders, but it can be hard, even futile to try and get past an RS on heat.
Love the engine so much the Tuono has gone for a GS1200 to keep my RS company. The RS is amazing - love the character - really is a great bike and puts a smile on my face everytime.
Nasty
Just an update after 6 years. Nothing to report, even the original pump is still working, never serviced. I've built a few other natural pools since this one. Real living water with excellent health and clarity. 100% percent unsanitised living water. These pools are biological water regeneration plants.
People who make these videos, not just this one but all over youtube, should use a polariser filter on the camera to reduce the reflections from the sky. But an amazing pool anyway :)
Thanks Michael, having good camera gear and knowing how to use it properly would be good. At the same time, reflections are one of the highlights of my pool and others I've built. The black Firestone liner makes the pool a mirror. I have many beautiful pics of reflections on this pool. Just one of the things that provide constant visual change. I should make another video, this one's nearly ten years old.
Hi how safe is this for stagnant water? and how often do you clean and refill? I'm thinking of doing the same.
Never stagnant, always excellent quality water. I filled this pool once, in 2006. There is no need to empty and clean. These pools are very good, when designed well. A poor design will give poor results, so lots of homework for you.
Finally got my youtube channel back, what a journey. As I said above, water never needs to be changed, in a good system.
An impressive and skillful ride...
Love the video and the bike. We just bought a 78 R80/7 to fix up. Not sure I'll take a 50 hp motorcycle to the track, but it could be fun! Follow along as we find new and entertaining ways to bleed... ruclips.net/video/cGVUYmsuA9w/видео.html

Thanks Michael, it was all great fun except for those false neutrals at the end of the straight. I've got another gearbox to swap in so I can pull it down and see why it's dropping out. Only does it when it gets hot and I'm pushing it 10/10. I also ride it improperly too, off road!
